National Title for NicCanna

Last Saturday was a momentous day for Monaghan Phoenix star Deirdre NicCanna who secured her first National Title at the Irish Universities Mountain Running Championships.  Deirdre was competing for Dublin University Harriers and was a convincing winner in the difficult 8.5km race held on Carnaderry Mountain in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.  The race included a gruelling 552-meter climb; definitely not for the faint hearted.  This win follows on from Deirdre’s success in winning last year’s Monaghan Phoenix Marathon.

It was another great day of running by Monaghan Phoenix athletes at the National Juvenile Championships in Athlone last Sunday. Tom Doherty made it through a tough qualification to make it into the final of the U13 600m. Tom ran a superb race in the final running a new PB, and finishing in an impressive 4th place. Andrew McKenna competed in the 800m U.18 and ran a very strong race to improve his PB by over 2 seconds, setting him up nicely for outdoors. Eoin Sheridan ran well in the U.12 600m, and was unlucky to not advance to the final in a very fast heat.   All three athletes gained valuable experience competing at this level, experience that will stand to them as they continue to grow as athletes.  This concludes a very successful 2018 Indoor Season for the Phoenix, and attention now shifts to outdoors.

The annual Glaslough Road races takes place on Monday with races for juveniles and seniors.  There is no training for our younger juveniles over Easter.  The first round of the county spring league will take place on Friday 13th April in Clones.  More details of all this will be distributed at training and on our Facebook page.
